The Greenhouse!!

Fall is here and so is the greenhouse!!! Just in a nick of time to huh?
I'll let the pictures tell the story...

When I opened the box and saw all the pieces I have to admit I was a little taken aback. "What did I get myself into??" I thought. As it turns out though, it was actually pretty easy to put together. Oh yeah, and man was I lucky too. You can see the original floor that was in the pergola that previously sat in this spot. I literally did not have to change a single piece of the "urbanite" that was used as a floor. The greenhouse fit perfectly around it.
You can see in this photo that the roof windows are being held up by a special window hinge. These are special pieces that I picked up extra. They are wax piston hinges that expand when they heat up and contract when they cool. hopefully they'll help me regulate the temperature inside.

I'm hoping to be able to build some kind of a solar heat sink inside to hold heat naturally over the cool evenings here. I may need extra heat, I'm not sure yet, but either way it will be fun to play around in here this winter.

Till next time!

Looks awesome!

But I would be lying if I didn't admit to being a bit jealous :). We went to our local planning board a few years ago to get permission to put up a greenhouse, but they said no. Oh, well.

Great to see how things have been going for you over the summer. From what I've heard from others, once you've gotten a greenhouse, it won't be long until you want another to play with as well. :-)

That looks fabulous Paul. Great job on installation. I have to say I am now in wishful thinking mode... maybe next year we can get one.

Ooh pretty. Well done on the giant jigsaw that is greenhouse construction. So what are you planning on putting in it? We have hope of getting one ourselves next year to try and expand our tiny growing space.

Hi, am new to your blog, but am enjoying it very much. Envious of your greenhouse! Am getting one too but mine will be tiny and lean against the wall of the house. I use our conservatory a fair amount to bring things on, so at least I have that. Thanks for showing the way! Helen

What gorgeous garden porn you have there!

May I just say how jealous I am?? I have a special account that I sock away money towards my greenhouse purchase. But every time I seem to get close, something comes up that requires the money ASAP. *Sigh* Someday!

Did you install this all by yourself, or did it require somebody on the other end holding stuff up? The reason I ask is that my husband probably won't help me install a greenhouse, so I need to know if I can do it myself. i'm pretty handy, but only have one set of arms and hands!

Thanks, we've been planning on this baby for a while now. We're really glad to have it. Particularly since the weather was just predicted to freeze tonight.

I did put it all together myself, except that I needed help to get the first corners up, and to lift the roof on. My wife and my kids helped. It wasn't heavy, just clumsy.

Now... what to plant???

I just found your blog.

Congratulations on the greenhouse. I've had mine for five years now, and it is the most fantastic hobby! I made mine with recycled materials. It's small 8x8, but I will double my space in two weeks time. It's not too late to get a greenhouse in before winter. Check out my kansasbungalow.blogspot.com and find the garden sections. Every flower and vegetable was started from seed.

You will love your new greenhouse!
