rode today

Well we'll see how sore I end up being tomorrow. I got out today for about a 4-5 mile ride in order to see where I stand before doing the ride to work this week. I did learn that my rear wheel needed a little tuning though. When I got back I found that it was a little out of shape and was rubbing against the brake. I think I was able to get that issue resolved though so we'll see I guess. If I'm not too terribly sore tomorrow, I'll go for a little longer one.
Did anyone else out there get out for a ride. How'd it go?

Being a stay-at-home mom with the one car going to work with my husband, I ride or walk to do all the grocery shopping, errands, and still spend more time walking and riding for pleasure. Don't worry about the sore bottom...it won't last long.

You know, I'm actually not too worried about the bottom area, plenty of padding, I was wondering if my legs would be sore or not, but so far so good.
How do you get the groceries back with kids, one of those kiddie trailers?

Yep, I rode to work yesterday.

It's been a while since I've ridden my bike--I forgot how biking on the street makes me nervous!

Michelle~ I know what you mean! I thought I would get swiped off the road at any moment. My ride actually ended up being 6 miles, I clocked it this morning, so It was .5 mi. longer than my actual commute. I'm definitely going to do it this week, but I think I'll take at least one more "training" ride tonight before going live so to speak.
How far is your commute?

Michelle said...

Yah, I could use a few more training sessions myself!

My commute's not bad; it's about 4 miles each way.

Enjoy the training session tonight!

Yeah, I have a trailer attached to my bike. Here's a link to the one I have. http://www.burley.com/products/dlite.html. I had this trailer even before I had my son because I've always used the bike for most all of my "around town" errands.

That's great that you do that! My neighbor has of those for his daughter to ride around in. I'd love to get one, but I think their a little too much $$ for me right now. I may look for a second hand one, or build myself something. We're thinking about starting to ride around for more of our local errands this year.
Glad to have you visiting Trina, hope to hear more from you!

I have a burley too. We also have a BoB trailer. We got them both used - $100 for the burley (it's a two-kid trailer, about 10 years old I think) and $50 for the BoB, which had been used maybe once.

I took the bus to work Monday and Tuesday because they were my first two days at a new job and I wanted to be dressed up and make sure I didn't get dirty or have to haul bike bags. But I rode the rest of the week - my commute is about 2 miles each way, sans trailer, and then I pick up the trailer at home and get the kid from day care in it, and he usually demands a fun ride - so another 2-4 more miles with the trailer each evening.

One nice thing about Minneapolis is that so many people bike, there are lots of trails and on-road bike lanes, and lots of used bike stuff available at garage sales. We did have to spend like $35 on a helmet for my son, and of course that wasn't used...we actually had to special-order it, it's the smallest size available in the U.S.

I need fenders, though. It was rainy today and my butt was wet until after lunch. Luckily this office is pretty casual, with lots of bike commuters.

Rosa, I really do like the trailers, and we have a really great thrift store that I have seen a couple of them in. I am watching out for them, but all of the ones I have seen have been really rough.
It's great that you are able to have trails and bike lanes easily accessible to you. We are getting to have more and more people here riding, but for instance, probably a fifth of my ride to work is on a two lane road with no real shoulder even, it get's a little sketchy at times. I will be riding to work next week for certain. I have been taking some training rides to get my legs ready, and was going to ride today, but ended up taking the day off because we had a really sick little boy at home.
I'm glad you took the time to comment. Hope to hear from you again soon.

Yeah, it's hard when you're not in a place with a lot of bikers, there's a lot of cultural support I have here that was missing other places I've lived (like in small-town Iowa, people used to throw soda cans and beer bottles out of car windows at me.) But even just stuff like being able to find a good mechanic and cheap used stuff, that all comes from the critical mass of people using similar technology.

Really, people doing scary stuff like riding on busy roads are breaking trail for other people. We have trails because we have lots of bike advocacy groups and lots of people out there every day being visible and vocal.

I'm really impressed with all of you riding so far each day! I'm so lazy, when we were house-hunting I drew a 2-mile circle around my then-workplace and refused to look outside of it.

The boyfriend and I live 70 miles apart :( Rode the bike 15 miles to the nearest bus station and drove from Colorado Springs to Denver. Then rode the bike another 4 miles.

A bit ambitious, as I probably do not ride more than 8 miles in a week! But the gase mileage on that beach cruiser is GREAT! (Oh .. and it is more fun with a basket and a bell!)

Colorado Springs is TERRIBLE about bike routes. Same with Denver.

Cynthia, WOW! that must really be love!!! I hope he appreciated it. I guess you had to do the same thing the other direction too huh?
I was so frustrated today, I wasgoing to start my riding to work, now that my kids are well, and I can breath again. So what happens? Rain and storms and now the wife's sick. I will not be defeated though, I will ride the first day the weather clears!
Oh, and a further update, I realized that what I thought was a level 5.5 mi. to to work is actaully a long slow grade. Yep the whole sucker is up hill. !@#$%$##@! OH well, it's downhill on the way home!!
